June 07, 2017 – Rotary Youth Exchange Day! Inbound exchange student Teddy says his goodbyes to the Club, and outbound exchange student Evan Mendoza talks about his upcoming year in Argentina.

June 14, 2017 – Sea Otter Classic Special - A wrap-up of the fund-raising, 4-day beer-pouring event that is one of the Club;s biggest events. We will have some results, some thank-you's, some awards?

June 21, 2017 – William Tienken from Aspire Health Plan will speak to the Club about Medicare coverage.

June 24, 2017 – Saturday - Big kick out party for President Anne. Email us for the details.

August 2016

August 03, 2016CSUMB President, Eduardo Ochoa, will give the Club an update on the University and its Salinas campus. 

August 10, 2016 – Imam Ragab, Imam of the Salinas Mosque and visiting Imam of the Salinas Valley Correctional and Prison facilities, speaks about Islam, its beliefs, and its humanity. 

August 17, 2016 – John Farahmand, DPT, OCS, and owner of Balance Therapy (and Bob Farahmand’s oldest son!):  “Living a Productive Life by Having Both the Right Mental Attitude and Physical Fitness”.  (Also brought to you by PP Dan O’Brien)

August 25, 2016 – (Thursday) All-City Rotary Taco Fiesta at Markham Ranch.  

August 26-28, 2016 – (Friday-Sunday) RYE District Inbound Orientation held in Salinas, headed up by our own PP Melissa Mears.

September 2016

September 07, 2016 – We challenged Jacqueline Kabat, who does comedy, improv, and all sorts of funny stuff, to make us laugh at 7:30 in the morning.  (Not sure it’s possible.)

September 14, 2016 – Everett Alvarez High School Student body officers visit and presentation. Our very new Rotary exchange student, Teddy, who just arrived from Thailand, will talk about his home country. Also on the agenda is "Rebound" Alina Mendoza, who recently returned from a year in Hungary on Rotary Youth Exchange.

September 21, 2016 – Dark. No meeting today due to our District Governor dinner on the 20th.  

September 28, 2016 – Laurence Samuels, Vice Chair of the Monterey County Libertarian Party, will speak to the club about...politics.


October 2016

October 05, 2016 – Marv Tuttle, who heads up the Monterey Aquarium “Day of Discovery” event, will talk about his project.  (“Day of Discovery” is a special day when volunteer SCUBA divers take physically and mentally developmentally challenged children SCUBA diving in the Monterey Bay.)  A wonderful undertaking that brings unbelievable joy to kids from all over the U.S.

October 12, 2016 – “Good Eating/Fun in the Kitchen”:  local food critic and columnist from The Californian, Joe Truskot, will discuss what he loves best, food. Everett Alvarez High School Student body officers visit and presentation. 

October 19, 2016 – A discussion about California Proposition 64 on the November ballot, the “marijuana initiative”.  A Mike Corlett production.

October 26, 2016 – Change capital punishment to life without parole, or fast-track the appeals process to speed up executions?  Another political forum, this time about Propositions 62 and 66, opposing measures regarding California’s death penalty.

October 30, 2016 – (Sunday) The 6th Annual Halloween Costume bike ride through Monterey. Costumes, families, Interacters, all welcome. Contact us at info@steinbeckrotary.org for more info.

November 02, 2016 – Claudia Melendez, newspaper journalist with the Monterey Herald, talks about her newly-published book.  Also, the EAHS Interact Club joins us with an update on their school projects.

November 09, 2016 – Not yet decided at time of print. Looking for a Veteran's Day program. EAHS student body officers visit us and share the latest on what’s happening at Alvarez High.

November 16, 2016 – Dark. No meeting today as we will be attending the Rotary International Dinner on the 17th.

November 17, 2016 – (Thursday) Rotary International Foundation dinner. Salinas location to be announced.

November 30, 2016 – It’s Rotary International Foundation Month, and Ms. Kelly Coleman is going to visit us with a program about the Tanzania water project.

january 2017

January 04, 2017 – It's Rotary Awareness Month, so several Steinbeck Rotarians are going to speak about their reasons for being in, and staying in, The Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club..

January 11, 2017 – A shorthand class on CPR.  Thoughts have changed over the last few years, about how we perform CPR, so this is an update.  (NOT a certification class, which requires about 3 hours.)

January 18, 2017 – An expert on Southeast Asian politics and culture will talk to us about her recent trip to Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

January 25, 2017 – Rod Belton offers up the second half of his workshop on Club Membership.

 


February 2017

February 01, 2017 – Cary Swenson brings back her staff, from Sylvan Learning Center, to teach us about learning, using games and puzzles..

February 08, 2017 – Julia Ohern, local manager of The Marine Mammal Center in Moss Landing, will update us on the health of the Monterey Bay, and how that affects the health of the seals, sea lions, and sea otters that populate our coastal waters.

February 15 , 2017 – Eddy Hamelin, archivist for the Salinas Library, shares a PowerPoint program about Steinbeck memorabilia at the library and at other local venues.

February 22, 2017 – Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter introduces us to the new Police Chief, Adele Frese (with a little accent on the last "e").  Another Roger Powers Production.

March 01, 2017 – Cheryl Camany, with the Salinas City Elementary School District, will inform us about a crisis right here under our noses, involving hundreds of grade school students.

March 08, 2017 – A noted philosopher, historian, theologian, Rotarian, and all-around good guy, is going to enlighten us about Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address.  Not to be missed!

March 15, 2017 – Speaker to be determined. 
March 22, 2017 – Cheryl Camany of the Family Resource Center will talk about the needs of Salinas' homeless children.

March 29, 2017 – Join us for breakfast at Everett Alvarez High School. 

 


April 2017

April 05, 2017 – Higuerito Honduras water project. Past President Debbie Hale has invited the water project team to update us on the status of this very worthwhile endeavor.

April 12, 2017 – Former Steinbeck Rotarian, former City Council member, and current Planning Commission member Jyl Lutes is going to address the housing situation in Salinas. A Roger Powers production. 

April 19, 2017 – Angel Gonzalez, Salinas police officer and Executive Director of the Salinas Police Activities League, will join us to talk about the local PAL activities.

April 20 - April 23 – (Thursday - Sunday)  Sea Otter Classic.  One of our biggest fund-raisers, and definitely our most fun event.  Sign up now to pour beer for 40,000 bicycle athletes and spectators, out at Laguna Seca.

April 26, 2017 – Club assembly to discuss Steinbeck's Home Brew Fest.

May 03, 2017 – Our own Past President and Past District Governor Leroy Blankenship will enlighten us about his Rotary4Guatemala Team, and the work they have done in Guatemala.  Rumor has it that he will show slides of himself actually doing work on the project.

May 10, 2017 – Kathy Cusson of Western Stage will lead an always an entertaining discussion with the Club.

May 17, 2017 –  Aurelio Salazar will speak about our local LULAC organization. 

May 24, 2017 – Current District Governor Yavuz Atila takes time in his very busy year to visit us and talk about the political climate in his homeland of Turkey.

May 31, 2017 – Walking tour of Chinatown. The Club will take a field trip to visit the new Chinatown Health Services Center.  Fresh air, light exercise, and we learn about a great, new facility for local needy folks.
